Jardins du Château des Milandes - Visites en Périgord

A Story of Stone… and Passion

Between Beynac and Domme, Château des Milandes has watched over the Dordogne Valley for more than five centuries. Built in 1489 by the Caumont family, lords of Castelnaud, this Renaissance gem stands in contrast to the austere medieval fortresses of the Périgord Noir. Here, elegance takes center stage: turrets, mullioned windows, colorful stained glass, formal French gardens… a prestigious residence designed for comfort and the art of living.

But beyond its beautiful stonework, it is the château’s destiny that captivates visitors. In 1947, Joséphine Baker, international music-hall star, fell in love with Milandes and purchased it. She dreamed of a better world and created her famous “Rainbow Tribe”—twelve children adopted from around the globe, raised in a spirit of peace and fraternity. An anti-racist activist and wartime resistance fighter, Joséphine turned Milandes into a refuge, a symbol, a home. She lived, loved, and fought there, sacrificing everything for that dream.

Today, the château visit retraces this extraordinary journey through personal objects, period photographs, and iconic stage costumes. A living, deeply human château, reflecting the woman who gave it its soul.
